birth of a race fan

Tommy and I parked his car on the side of a two lane road in the infield and hiked it back out of the woods toward the track. We could hear the impossibly-loud buzzing of the cars approaching the 200mph mark on the back straight.

We walked through swarming crowds of fans and stopped to admire Corvette's GTS car at the vendor paddock. Next door was Cadillac's LMP entry, then the Panoz booth with last year's LMP car. We kept walking through the late summer heat.

As we approached the fence we could see the cars whipping by at incredible speeds. The sound was enormous, towering over us and crashing into our ears.

The Panoz LMP car shot by us, ripping the air into concussive waves of sheer sound and belching fire out its ass end. The backfires as it slowed for the last turn on the circuit shook our insides.

Tommy turned to look at me, in slow motion. His face was spread in a wide grin and his eyes sparkled.

"Wow! These cars are loud!" He shouted.

I laughed my head off with the sheer glee of speed and sound.

And so was born a race fan.
